Get your project recognised in the Greening the Islands Awards: call for applications

Our upcoming international conference in the Canary Islands will also see a new edition of the Greening the Islands Awards, an initiative aimed at recognising viable and innovative projects for more sustainable islands.

All the islands of the world are invited to participate in the awards on condition they have worked on projects related to the following topics:

    • Renewable energy and energy efficiency
    • Sustainable mobility/transportation
    • Water
    • Waste
    • Public awareness campaigns

Our seven-person jury will evaluate projects based on qualitative and quantitative criteria, including CO2 savings, ecological and economic value added, transferability to other islands or common areas, the degree of innovation, involvement and public awareness. Projects that illustrate cooperation between islands are also qualified.

  • Gonzalo Piernavieja Izquierdo, of ISLENET – Network of European Islands for Energy & the Environment
  • Joeri de Ridder, Chairman of the European Association for Battery, Hybrid and Fuel Cell Electric Vehicles and Vice-President of the World Electric Vehicle Association

  • David Newman, President of the International Solid Waste Association
  • Emanuele Taibi, Islands Energy Transition Analyst, The International Renewable Energy Agency, Senior Programme Officer for Technology
  • Konstantina Toli, Senior Programme Officer, Global Water Partnership – Mediterranean
  • Josep Maria Tost i Borràs, President of the Association of Cities and Regions for Recycling and Sustainable Resource Management (ACR+)

The deadline for submitting projects is 4 November 2016. and participation is free. Read the awards regulations and submit your application on our website.

Last year, the winning entries – from the Spanish island of El Hierro, the smallest of the Canary Islands, and from Malta – beat out competition from locations including Cape Verde, Tonga, the Azores, and Tilos in Greece. Read the announcement of last year’s awards.
